The Verge

The tech website I’ve  decided to follow is The Verge. It is a website founded by Joshua Topolsky who used to the the editor-in-chief at popular tech news website Engadget.

What I like about this site is that there is a collection of tech news–the newest rumors, product reviews, articles about different gadgets, web shows, podcasts and so much more. It also has a really cool layout that it is easy to navigate through.

One article that caught my eye was that more smartphones than laptops were shipped in 2011.

Research group Canalys estimates that 487.7 million smartphones were shipped in 2011, an increase of over 60 percent from 2010.

I don’t think that smartphones are in competition with laptops but it shows this trend that people are joining the mobile movement of owning a smartphone. One commenter wrote that not only are they not in competition, but a smartphone really just complements owning a laptop which is exactly what it does for me. I have a number of things I save, bookmark, email myself on my phone that I don’t have time to look at to later read on my laptop when I’m finally home.

It also says in the article that this probably won’t be a consistent trend. For one, most people probably already own a laptop or desktop computer (even a tablet) while more people are just now buying smartphones. I don’t think people are swapping out their computers every couple of years like they would do with their phones.

Either way, I think it’s pretty amazing how far we’ve come with phone technology. You’re essentially walking around with a small computer in your pocket that just happens to make phone calls.
